How to Change Your Facebook Ad Preferences

Advertising is on social media like TV and radio shows. You can’t remove ads from your Facebook feed, but you do have some control over the types of ads you see.

You can select the ad titles you like and deselect the ones you don’t. You can allow ads from some advertisers and hide others. Don’t limit the types of ads you see on your Facebook posts, likes, and followers, at least until your business transitions to an ad-free model.

Go to your Facebook advertising settings

If you use the Facebook website or mobile app, you can go to your ad settings to make changes.

Go to your Facebook ad settings on the web

  • Go to Facebook.com, sign in and select the arrow in the upper right corner.
  • Select Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  • Select Items from the left navigation bar.

Go to your Facebook advertising settings in the mobile app

  • Open the Facebook and select the Menu tab.
  • Expand Settings & Privacy below and select Settings.
  • Go to permissions and select ad settings.

On the Ad Settings page, use the sections below to customize the ads you see based on your interests.

Change your Facebook ad settings

The Ad Settings page has three sections: Advertisers, Ad Titles, and Ad Settings. Here’s how it works:

Change your settings for advertisers

Select an advertiser to see recently viewed advertisers. To hide an advertiser from your list, select Hide Ads to the right of their name. If you do this, the Hide Ads button will become the Cancel button if you change your mind.

Select the details at the bottom of the list and do the same for other advertisers you want to hide.

Once you’ve unblocked an advertiser, it will appear in the “Blocked Clients” section at the bottom of this page. If you go to this section and select Cancel, you will start seeing ads from this advertiser again.

Another way to hide an advertiser is to go to the “Advertisers” section of the ad you clicked on this page. Use the Hide Ads button to hide these advertisers.

Change ad theme settings

Select ad topics to view data-driven topics. These are the types of ads used based on your activity on Facebook. They range from food to beauty to music to technology and more.

If you want to see fewer ads on certain topics, select them from the list. Then choose less.

Once you do this, you won’t see as many ads for that topic, and advertisers won’t be able to target you based on your interests.

You can view all data-specific topics by selecting More at the bottom of the list, but there may be more categories to sort through. Alternatively, you can use the ‘Search all titles’ box above to search for a specific ad category.

Once you’ve narrowed down your ad titles, they’ll be listed at the bottom of the page. So if you change your mind, select one, choose Not Set, and put it in the list of data-driven topics.

Change your ad settings

Choose your advertising settings to manage the data used to show you ads. This section has five customizable fields:

  • Activity data from our partners: This includes personalized advertising based on your activity. There is no alternative to opting out of interest-based advertising.
  • Categories used to contact you: These include profile information that advertisers use to target their ads. Use the radio buttons to enable or disable items in the list. Also, select the “More Categories” option below to view additional categories.
  • Audience-based advertising: This includes advertisers using data for user activity or relevant advertising.

Select an advertiser and view details, including a link to their Facebook page. If they used the list to contact you, you can see the list too. Select this option to prevent list-based ads from appearing and to opt out of list-based ads.

  • Ads served outside Facebook: This includes ads served on non-Facebook websites or apps that use Facebook’s advertising services. You can change the key to Denied.
  • Social Engagement: This includes serving ads based on what your Facebook friends see. For example:

“If you like the page showing the ad, you can tell your friends that you like the page after seeing the ad.”

At the bottom of Social Interactions, select Friends or Only Me.

Adjust your ad preferences in your feed

It may take some time to adjust your ad preferences in your Facebook settings. It’s worth it, but you can quickly tune in by checking your Facebook newsfeed for ads and advertisers.

To hide an ad or advertiser on the web or mobile app, select the three dots in the top right corner to open a dropdown menu.

To stop seeing ads, click Hide Ads or Why am I seeing this ad? Then hide it and the advertiser’s ads will no longer show.

Note: Selecting Manage Changes to Ads Preferences from the Hide button takes you directly to the Advertisers section of Ads Settings.

Just because you can’t remove ads from your Facebook experience doesn’t mean you should keep seeing ads you don’t like. Please take a moment to adjust your Facebook advertising preferences.
